Safety rules
Motor racing is unsafe. Despite many efforts on the part of the organizers to ensure the safety of the spectators and participants, it’s impossible to insure against all risks.
This sacramental phrase in different variations appears of every spectator’s booklet, every announcement about holding a rally and the organizers are constantly saying it.
The main risk-group is not the racers who are protected by safety cages, fireproof overalls, safety belts and helmets but the spectators who are not provided with any protective devices.
Rally is a fast-speed competition taking place on the roads of general usage. It means that the spectators don’t seat at safe grandstands but stand beside the race route.
Sport cars run in high-speed sections with an enormous speed, often being the top one both for the crew and the equipment. The car can become unpredictable in any moment: slippery part of the road, a pilot who has lost control of the car, error in the record and there you are – an uncontrolled missile weighing more than a ton is hurtling away from the road. On the one hand such unpredictability and abundance of spectacular crashes is one of the attractiveness factors of the rally for spectators. On the other hand the spectators at rally incur a serious danger of finding themselves on the trajectory of the car that has gone off the road.
A simple set of rules presented below will help you to minimize the risk level while watching the rally.
Choose and occupy the place for watching in advance. It won’t be a great pleasure for you to drive or walk in search of a spectacular place waiting that behind or towards you an opening referee’s, if not a sport car, will appear at full speed.
Choose your parking place in such a way that your car won’t hinder the passage on the highway and it’s preferable that it’s not seen from the route.
It’s better to choose the place for watching in such a way that you have a big section of road within eyeshot. Firstly, you'll see more, secondly, it's safer to see the car long before it passes by you. Hills are good for this purpose – you can see further and upon that chances are slim that the car that has gone off the road will go up.
Always keep the racing car in sight. Don’t turn you back even to the most slow-speed team – surprises come unexpectedly.
You must make sure that in case of emergency you will be able to move out of the place you are standing.
Try not to stand in a crowd – you won’t be able to leap aside rapidly when necessary. There will be enough places for everyone.
Always watch the rally on your feet.
Under no circumstances walk on the road during the passage of racing units. It can be mortal. Not all rally cars roar with their mufflers they way they are heard over a kilometer.
Do not cross barrier even if it's just a tape. It's intended for your safety and not to deprive you of a spectacular scene.
Under no circumstances stand on the trajectory of possible emerging of the cars. The pilot may miss the turn, the co-driver may call left turn instead of right, and the car may spin at high speed during driving into the curve or jumping from the ramp.
The most dangerous spots are the exposed sides of the turns, u-turns, 50 meters before and after the ramp.
Immediately change the place of watching if you see that there is some probability of the car getting out of its way towards you.
Follow the recommendations and requirement of the safety marshals, who are the people dressed in the vests who look after safety of the spectators in the crowded places. If possible, help them by informing about the problems noticed on the route, help other spectators to follow the safety rules.
Don’t drive the rally route before the opening car (broom) has passed, which is usually a car with a green flashing light.
Be careful while moving along the rally route. Remember that the participants must arrive at checkpoints strictly according to the schedule and the smallest delay can greatly affect their result.
Try to move along the route in the same direction as the units move. It won’t be a pleasure to face a team dug up from a snow bank that tries to catch up the time lost heading towards you.
Remember that high-speed sections can be cancelled or suspended due to unsafe behavior of the spectators. Show respect to the rally, its participants and other spectators.
